The first-ever Joy Belmonte Inter-Barangay Amateur 10-Ball Open Billiard Tournament in Quezon City will be launched on February 3, with the aim of discovering a new generation of Filipino cue artists.
Representatives from the 142 barangays covering the city’s six districts are expected to see action in the tournament that will last until February 9 under the auspices of Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP) chairman Isaac Belmonte.
Outside of the P100,000 cash prize and trophy to be given to the winning player, a complete set of billiard table and balls will be donated to the winning barangay as part of the support to its sports program.
No less than Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte will lead the opener of the meet, where cash prize of P50,000 plus a trophy also awaits the second placer, P25,000 and trophy to the third placer and fourth placers, and consolation prizes to the top 32 finishers.
A simultaneous double round elimination will be held in each district where the 142 participants are going to be trimmed down to the final 64 players for the knockout phase.
Ten-ball is a rotation game very similar to nine-ball, but more difficult, using 10 balls instead of nine, and with the 10 ball instead of the nine as the “money ball.”
The popularity of the game has risen in recent years as a result of concerns that nine-ball has suffered as a result of flaws in its fundamental structure (particularly the ease with which players can often make balls from the break).
The World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) World Standardized Rules for 10-ball are very similar to those for nine-ball, but with key changes to ensure the difficulty of the game and its marketability as an alternative to nine-ball.
