Cabang, Hoffman officially qualify for Paris Olympics

Track and field athletes John Cabang and Lauren Hoffman have officially qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association confirmed their qualification via social media late Tuesday evening.

Cabang has secured his spot in the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a final ranking of 30, down from 29 the previous week. Hoffman, competing in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, moved from 36 to 39 in the rankings.

Kristina Knott was in contention last week for the women’s 200 meters, ranked at 40, but fell to 57, missing the qualification when the entry window closed on June 30.

Cabang and Hoffman will soon join the Philippine training camp in Metz, France, to intensify their preparations for the Games.

A total of 40 top entries in Cabang’s category were confirmed for the Olympics at the end of the world rankings period on June 30. The 22-year-old earned his spot after competing in 16 international meets since the qualification period began in July last year. Most recently, Cabang won a silver medal with a time of 13.68 seconds at the Ordizia meet on June 22.

Hoffman’s qualification came in a category where 48 slots were available. Her participation in 13 events since last year allowed her to amass 1223 points, securing her place. In her latest performance, Hoffman finished eighth with a time of 57.05 seconds at the Czesław Cybulski Memorial in Poznan, Poland, on June 23.

Unfortunately, Knott did not make the cut for the Paris Olympics. While 40 entries are expected to be confirmed for the women’s 200 meters, Knott’s ranking fell out of range by the cutoff date.
