The Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) asked the government to adopt minimum wage-setting mechanisms that consider business productivity and financial capacity, particularly for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), alongside the workers’ well-being.
This topped the list of resolutions adopted by ECOP during the 45th National Conference of Employers held on June 25 to 26, 2024 in Manila.
The group underscored the need for a balanced approach to wage setting, ensuring sustainable job creation and business growth.
It also cited the critical need for developing a skilled workforce to thrive in a technology-driven environment.
The organization called on the government, the academe and training institutions to prioritize programs that equip Filipinos with “life skills, technological skills, and soft skills necessary for employment, particularly among the youth and underserved sectors.”
It also asked the government to develop national resilience programs to support both workers and businesses facing technological disruptions, climate change impact and geopolitical challenges.
The group said businesses which adopt advanced technologies and sustainable practices should be incentivized by the government.
Employers also requested for subsidies and training programs to help businesses transition and equip their workers with the necessary skills.
ECOP pushed for bipartism, tripartism and social dialogue to address workplace issues like job creation, fair compensation and business sustainability.
It asked the government to strictly adhere to the principles of tripartism when appointing representatives to tripartite bodies.
