The 7th edition of The Eddys (Entertainment Editors’ Choice) by the Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors (SPEEd) is honoring the brightest stars of local cinema, recognizing their important roles in revitalizing theater attendance post-pandemic.
This annual event trains the spotlight on the films and actors that have drawn audiences back to the big screen, thus helping the industry rebound.
One of the event’s highlights is the Box Office Heroes Award, which acknowledges the lead stars of last year’s top-grossing films. These films grossed over P100 million each, signaling a strong resurgence in local cinema.
“Each of the films cited in this year’s Box Office Heroes Award has earned more than P100 million at the box office,” said SPEEd president Salve Asis, entertainment editor of Pilipino Star Ngayon and Pang Masa. “The figures they produced are more than enough to inspire the industry to continue making films that are both commercially viable and artistically impactful.”
This prestigious accolade will be awarded to Dingdong Dantes, Marian Rivera, Piolo Pascual, Alden Richards, Julia Montes, and Kathryn Bernardo. These stars have not only brought in significant box office numbers but also captivated audiences with their performances.
Dingdong and Marian are celebrated for their roles in Rewind, a 49th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry. This family drama has become the highest-grossing local film of all time, earning P1 billion during its run. Rewind is a collaborative effort between Star Cinema, Agosto Dos Media, and APT Entertainment.
Alden and Julia will be honored for Five Breakups and A Romance, a romantic drama that grossed over P100 million. The film is a co-production of GMA Pictures, Cornerstone Studios, and Myriad Entertainment.
Kathryn is recognized for her performance in A Very Good Girl, a dark comedy thriller by Star Cinema that grossed P100 million. It’s the first local film to achieve this milestone since the pandemic began.
Piolo will be celebrated for his role in Mallari, the 49th MMFF’s second-highest earner. The horror film by Mentorque Productions garnered P225 million at the tills.
The Box Office Heroes awards will be presented during The 7th Eddys Awards Night on July 7 at 7:00 p.m. at the Ceremonial Hall of the Marriott Grand Ballroom at Newport World Resorts in Pasay City. The event will be broadcast on a delayed telecast on ALLTV on July 14 at 10:00 p.m.
