Founded in 2015 by Paul Cornelissen’s father, Paul Sr., a Dutch trader who fell in love with Filipino craftsmanship during visits in the 70s, the company has grown into a major exporter with over 100 clients worldwide.

“The collection is named after us. My father is a trader who grew a fondness for the Philippines. The Philippines is one of the most creative countries together with Indonesia. Due to the lack of commercial views, we see a lot less international buyers coming to the Philippines. On the other hand, I think there’s a lot of very good supply of raw materials which can be sourced from the local market,” Cornelissen said.

The younger Paul joined the family business after earning an Economics degree and working as a sales representative for his father’s import company.

With a keen eye honed by international travels, he now guides the design and export strategy for Fashion Interiors by Paul Cornelissen.

East meets west

Cornelissen’s design philosophy is a unique blend of European aesthetics and Filipino touches. He sources a significant portion of materials locally, utilizing native materials like rattan, abaca and driftwood alongside some imported fabrics.

The approach has struck a chord with international buyers, who appreciate the distinctive character of their pieces. The company’s ingenuity is core to their creations.

The company is not afraid to experiment with unexpected combinations, like pairing high-gloss finishes with natural fibers, resulting in truly unique and eye-catching furniture.

Filipino craftsmanship

Fashion Interiors by Paul Cornelissen prides itself on employing a team of 200 skilled Filipino artisans operating out of their manufacturing hub in Pampanga.

Cornelissen acknowledges the challenge of retaining skilled workers due to the global demand for Filipino talent, but emphasizes the exceptional quality their craftsmanship brings to their furniture.

“The heart of our collection lies in handcrafted pieces, a skill that sets us apart. We’re passionate about showcasing the exceptional talent and materials the Philippines has to offer the world,” Cornelissen said, citing how his craft allowed him to work alongside a team of remarkable Filipino and foreign designers.

Global trends

Unfazed by a diminished Philippine presence at international furniture fairs, Fashion Interiors by Paul Cornelissen maintains a robust international profile, attending fairs and cultivating relationships with clients across the globe.

Its reach spans continents, with customers in Australia, the US, the Middle East, Europe and South America. It has a network of showrooms beyond their flagship store in Makati, including a space in Pampanga and a year-round booth at Deco Central.

Cornelissen, a seasoned traveler himself, spends a significant portion of the year attending major furniture fairs like the recent Milan Furniture Show.

These events serve as a vital source of inspiration, allowing him to keep his finger on the pulse of global design trends.

He observes everything from popular materials and finishes to innovative furniture shapes and functions.

Upon returning to the Philippines, he skillfully integrates them with the company’s signature “East meets West” aesthetic and readily available Filipino materials.

This approach results in furniture collections that feel fresh and internationally relevant, while still retaining a unique Filipino identity.

Expansion plan

While Fashion Interiors by Paul Cornelissen boasts a strong presence in the export market, Cornelissen acknowledges the potential for domestic growth.

He sees an increasing appreciation for high-quality, design-forward furniture among Filipinos who have traveled abroad and are familiar with international trends.

The company’s existing showrooms in Makati and Pampanga cater to this growing demand, and Cornelissen hints at the possibility of further expansion within the Philippines.
