Law enforcement authorities have arrested the suspect behind the road rage incident that resulted in the death of a family driver, according to Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Benjamin Abalos, Jr.
The suspect was identified as Gerrard Raymund Yu, 34, who arrived in Camp Crame, Quezon City on Wednesday. Abalos and Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil presented him to the media.
The Southern Police District (SPD) and the Land Transportation Office (LTO) earlier launched a full-scale investigation to apprehend the suspect responsible for the fatal shooting of a 65-year-old family driver along the EDSA-Ayala tunnel on Tuesday afternoon.
The tragedy unfolded around 2:30 PM in Barangay Urdaneta when a confrontation between Yu—the driver of a black Mercedes Benz, identified by plate number BCS77—and a white Toyota Innova driven by the victim escalated into violence.
The victim, accompanied by a female passenger and a minor, was driving from Bonifacio Global City when he was shot. Despite being wounded, the victim managed to steer the vehicle to the side but subsequently lost control, crashing into two motorcycles.
SPD Director Brig. Gen. Leon Victor Rosete strongly condemned the incident and vowed to bring the perpetrator to justice. His unit is actively pursuing the suspect, conducting ballistic examinations, and verifying vehicle and firearm ownership to swiftly solve the case.
“The SPD is fully committed to using all available resources to ensure that justice is served,” Rosete assured.
Parallel to the police investigation, the LTO has issued a show-cause order to the registered owner of the Mercedes Benz.
LTO Chief Vigor Mendoza II confirmed the agency is now closely coordinating with the Philippine National Police (PNP) to identify and locate the suspect based on witness accounts.
The vehicle, registered in Las Piñas City, has been flagged, and the owner is required to present a notarized affidavit explaining the incident. The show-cause order cites violations including reckless driving and improper person to operate a motor vehicle, underlining the gravity of the incident.
Criminal charges related to the shooting are being separately investigated by the PNP. The LTO has placed the Mercedes Benz under alarm pending the investigation.
Rosete emphasized the importance of public cooperation, urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. He also reminded all motorists to exercise patience and respect on the road to prevent such tragedies.
