‘Aghon’ intensifies into a tropical storm

Metro Manila as well as provinces in Calabarzon continue to experience heavy rainfall Sunday as ‘Aghon’ intensified into a tropical storm.

PAGASA said in its 8:00 AM weather bulletin that the cyclone maintained its strength and is now over Dolores, Quezon province, moving northwestward at 15 kilometers per hour (km/h).

‘Aghon’ is forecast to move across the landmass of mainland Calabarzon and Polillo Islands in the next 12 hours. It will likely remain as a tropical storm, but its weakening has not been ruled out.

PAGASA said it may reach a severe tropical storm category by Tuesday and evolve into a typhoon by Wednesday while exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

The storm had maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 80 km/h as of this posting.

PAGASA listed the following areas under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1: northern and central portions of Quezon (Alabat, Perez, Quezon, Gumaca, Lopez, Macalelon, General Luna, Unisan, Pitogo, Plaridel, Agdangan, Padre Burgos, Atimonan, Mauban, Real, General Nakar, Infanta, Sampaloc, Pagbilao, Calauag, Lucban, Tayabas City, Lucena City, Tiaong, Candelaria, Sariaya, Dolores, San Antonio) including Polillo Islands, Laguna, the eastern portion of Rizal (Jala-Jala, Pililla, Tanay), and the eastern portion of Batangas (Tanauan City, San Jose, Lipa City, Mataasnakahoy, Balete, Malvar, Santo Tomas, Cuenca, San Pascual, Batangas City, Ibaan, Padre Garcia, Rosario, San Juan, Taysan, and Lobo).
