President Grand Palace more than Binondo culinary hub

A return to President Grand Palace Restaurant in Binondo after nearly a decade felt like a nostalgic homecoming. Stepping inside, the familiar aroma of Chinese spices wafted through the air. But what truly struck me was the subtle yet impressive new decor. The minimalist design breathed new life into the space while retaining the essence of its heritage.

The stage at the back, unchanged from previous visits, stood as a testament to the restaurant’s versatility. It served as a playground, a platform for community events, and even a stage for Chinese opera. President Grand Palace Restaurant has always been more than just a place to eat; it’s a cultural hub where memories are made and traditions are upheld.

Despite its stature as a premier dining destination on Ongpin Street, President Grand Palace remains refreshingly affordable. With most dishes priced between 400 and 500 pesos, it strikes a balance between quality and affordability, catering to a diverse clientele.

Local associations and families alike find President Grand Palace a convenient venue for meetings, events, and celebrations. Its spacious halls and welcoming ambiance provide the perfect backdrop for gatherings of all kinds, fostering a sense of community within Binondo’s bustling streets.

As I scanned the menu, old favorites beckoned, reminding me of cherished meals shared with loved ones.

Their extensive menu boasts a wide selection of culinary delights, from shark fin, bird’s nest, and abalone to pigeon, crab and prawn dishes.

Diners can also choose from various scallop and oyster preparations, along with an assortment of fish, soups, duck, chicken and vegetable options.

For meat lovers, there are tantalizing choices like pork, beef, and frog dishes. Those craving noodles or rice can choose from fried noodles, rice rolls, rice and noodle soup, and more.

To complement a meal, they also offer roasted cold cuts, refreshing shakes, and juices. With such a vast array of offerings, President Grand Palace caters to every palate.

The fried beef hofan and salt and pepper squid are must-tries, each bite a symphony of flavors. For a starter, the fish lip soup or spinach soup with shrimp offers delightful and comforting tastes.

The sweet and sour fish fillet and braised mixed vegetables are sure to please as well. One of their most famous signature dishes is eel cooked in black bean and chili sauce. It’s said that people travel specifically for this dish, and I can see why.

Given its inherent bony nature, diners may need to be a bit meticulous while eating the eel. However, the succulent flesh, infused with the bold flavors of black beans and a subtle blend of sweetness and spice, pairs exquisitely with a serving of piping hot, fragrant rice.

Though the restaurant faced challenges, including a temporary closure during the pandemic, its resurgence is a testament to resilience and family bonds. The original owner’s daughter, now married to the head chef’s son, has taken over, ensuring the legacy of President Grand Palace endures.

Their story embodies the unwavering spirit of the Filipino-Chinese community, united in overcoming adversity and preserving tradition. As I savored each bite of our meal, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the enduring presence of President Grand Palace Restaurant – a beacon of culinary excellence and cultural heritage in the heart of Binondo.
