Radio anchor Juan “DJ Johnny Walker” Jumalon won a case over a land dispute that sought to take over the lot of the radio station he operated before he was shot to death at his home in Misamis Occidental, his wife Cherebel said on Tuesday.
Mrs. Jumalon said her husband had two court cases before his murder, both connected to his radio station 94.7 Calamba Gold FM.
She said the first case was competition with a rival, saying in Filipino the rival “could not accept that there was another radio station in Calamba town.”
The second case involves a dispute over ownership of the lot where the radio station is located at the Jumalon residence in Barangay Don Bernardo A. Neri.
Meanwhile, Philippine National Police Chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. reiterated the force’s commitment to protecting all journalists and media practitioners in the wake of the killing of Jumalon. In a statement, Acorda said the PNP will continue to work tirelessly to create an environment in which journalists can fulfill their vital role in society without fear of violence or intimidation.
