The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is seeking the cooperation of one of the biggest automotive dealers’ associations to finally resolve the backlogs in car plates and the delay in the release of car registration documents.
Speaking before the recent 5th General Assembly of the Philippine Automotive Dealers Association in Taguig City, LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II narrated that upon his assumption into office, he immediately created a technical working group that analyzed and formulated solutions to “low-lying” problems he had observed, along with the transportation stakeholders.
“So because we created a TWG that met every week, and this is something I’d like to do also to PADA,” he said.
There are several changes that are fastracking with the help of another automobile group, the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc., and the motorcycle dealers association.
Other major changes in policies have already been forwarded to the Department of Transportation for approval.
Mendoza said he is trying to solve the backlog of motor vehicle plates, admitting that as of the present, there are still dealing with 80,000 plate backlogs.
With the continuing registration of new vehicles, the current demand for vehicle plate demand is between 2,000 to 4,000 per day, he said.
The LTO chairperson said the agency’s plate-making plant is now at 95 percent full production to solve the plate backlogs these coming months.
“What does it mean? We can now produce.. we are producing one million plates a month. We have dedicated machines that cater only motor vehicles,” he said.
“Right now as we speak, I have instructed all district offices, regional directors that we should be able to cater to the current demand as far as motor vehicles is concerned,” he added.
He said he himself has to wait for three months to get the official receipt/certificate of registration of the car he bought last July.
“And next week we have a meeting with our regional directors because I’d like to… some of them will have to explain lang things because we continue to receive reports that the release of OR/CR takes too long as well as the plates, and we’d like to address why there is a delay,” he said.
He cited the long wait of automotive dealers for the approval of their accreditation as he had vowed to speed up the process through online applications.
“I’d like to sit down with you (PADA) guys and discuss the problems in your head on how we can help you dig that and address those problems how to make things faster and more efficient as far as registration of vehicles is concerned,” he said.
“Here at LTO, I hope you view us, we’re here to assure that. We are here to help your business flourish and not to curtail the lack of regulatory requirements. We need to expedite our paperwork,” he noted.
