‘Jenny’ weakens but lashes Taiwan

Typhoon “Jenny” further weakened and is now outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, but not before lashing Taiwan, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Thursday.

The eye of the storm was estimated at 275 kilometers west northwest of Itbayat, Batanes, the state weather bureau said. Jenny was moving westward at 15 km/h, packing maximum sustained winds of 140 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 170 km/h.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 was raised in the northern portion of Batanes. Signal No. 1 was hoisted over the rest of Batanes, Babuyan Islands, northern portion of Apayao (Calanasan, Luna), northwestern portion of Cagayan (Pamplona, Sanchez-Mira, Claveria, Santa Praxedes, Abulug), and the northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Pagudpud, Adams, Dumalneg, Bangui, Burgos, Pasuquin, Vintar).

Jenny (international name Koinu) grazed the southern edge of Taiwan on Thursday, lashing the island with the strongest winds it has ever recorded and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of homes.
