NLEX Corporation is pleased to announce its proactive efforts to mitigate flooding issues in the San Simon area of Pampanga. The company is currently undertaking preliminary works to elevate a 200-meter section, with the aim of completing the project before the year’s end.
The comprehensive project encompasses several key components:
1. Detailed Engineering Design: NLEX Corporation is finalizing the detailed engineering design for raising the pavement of both the north and south bounds of the 200-meter section under the Tulaoc overpass by 0.7 meters. This enhancement will provide better flood protection.
2. Flood Management Infrastructure: The project also includes the construction of flood walls equipped with sump pits and sump pumps. These measures are designed to effectively manage floodwaters and prevent future flooding incidents in the area.
3. San Simon Ramp: The pavement of the San Simon ramp will be raised, and the drainage system will be improved to ensure smoother traffic flow and minimize flooding risks.
The urgent need for these improvements became apparent during recent heavy rainfall, which resulted in extensive flooding in Central and North Luzon, including a 100-meter stretch of NLEX San Simon. This flooding led to traffic congestion as motorists sought alternative routes to avoid the affected area.
NLEX Corporation President and General Manager Luigi L. Bautista highlighted the issue: “The flooding outside NLEX has overflowed into the lowest area of NLEX in San Simon. We have requested the DPWH to raise the Tulaoc overpass to elevate this section of the expressway.”
Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Manuel Bonoan committed to raising the Tulaoc overpass by 0.7 meters. Following this, NLEX plans to add an additional 0.3 meters to the pavement, resulting in a total elevation of 1 meter for the 200-meter section of NLEX San Simon.
At the same briefing, Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation President Rogelio L. Singson suggested the construction of a water impounding facility in Candaba as a long-term solution to prevent flooding in nearby low-lying areas of Pampanga.
CAVITEX to launch girders for C5 Link segment
CAVITEX Infrastructure Corporation (CIC) is set to commence the girder launching activity for the CAVITEX C5 Link Segment 2 R1 Interchange.
Scheduled from September 15 to September 25, 2023, during nighttime hours from 10 PM to 4 AM, CIC will implement counterflow schemes at the Parañaque Toll Plaza. Specifically, the scheme will be in place for Manila-bound traffic from September 15 to 19, 2023, and for Cavite-bound traffic from September 19 to 25, 2023. To ease congestion during this activity, CIC will activate counterflow lanes as required.
Mr. Raul L. Ignacio, President and General Manager of CIC, emphasized the significance of this development: “Upon its completion by the first quarter of 2024, CAVITEX C5 Link Segment 2 will reduce travel time between Sucat Road and CAVITEX (Coastal Road) by 10 minutes, enhancing daily commutes for our motorists.”
The R-1 Interchange represents a crucial 1.9-kilometer section (Segment 2) of the CAVITEX C5 Link project, a 7.7-kilometer, 2×3 lane expressway designed to connect CAVITEX R1 to C5 Road in Taguig. Once the CAVITEX C5 Link is fully operational, it is expected to accommodate over 50,000 vehicles per day, significantly decreasing travel times to and from Makati and Taguig from Parañaque City, Las Piñas City, and Cavite Province. This development promises to alleviate traffic congestion within Metro Manila.
