The Board of Investments sees the great potential of game development as one of the higher-value segments of the information technology-business process management sector.
BOI executive director Corieh Halili-Dichosa noted the contribution of digital interactive goods and service activities, including game development and animation, at P325 billion in 2022, or more than 20 percent of the creative economy.
“In terms of employment, the digital interactive sector recorded a growth rate of 4.5 percent, or about 388,828 quality jobs to Filipinos,” she said at the Philippine Game Development Expo 2023 held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City on Aug. 18 to 20, 2023,
She said the BOI was willing to help move the industry to higher levels of growth and achieve its roadmap.
Dichosa underscored the need to work on continuously replenishing the pool of qualified labor and reduce the training costs of local companies to make the industry more competitive.
The government teamed up with education institutions to implement projects and programs that would prepare Filipino graduates and fulfill the needs of digital industries.
“Our partnership with the Commission on Higher Education to strengthen industry-academe linkages resulted in the conduct of the National Skills Mapping and Survey on Human Resource Development Needs of the IT-BPM sector. Released in June 2022, the report highlighted the concern about the readiness of talent entering the workforce in the game development industry,” Dichosa said.
The report confirmed the need for proactive government interventions to equip students with the necessary skills for the future. It emphasized the reskilling and upskilling of the industry workforce to remain competitive globally.
PGDX 2023, organized by the Game Developers Association of the Philippines, brought together gamers and game developers to promote the numerous opportunities in the game development and animation industry of the Philippines.
