DoubleDragon Corp. said Tuesday it started the construction of its first overseas hotel in Hokkaido, Japan.

DoubleDragon said in a disclosure to the stock exchange it held a groundbreaking ceremony for the 482-room Hotel101-Niseko project on Aug. 26, 2023.

The company said it engaged Iwata Chizaki Inc. as the contractor for the project. Iwata Chizaki is one of the largest contractors in Japan and the one that built the Chitose International Airport in Saporro.

The upcoming Hotel101-Niseko is located on a 1.17-hectare property in Hokkaido Prefecture and is expected to be patronized by local domestic travelers in Japan and foreign tourists.

Niseko will be one of the largest value hotels in Niseko with 482 signature HappyRooms offering comfort, convenience and accessibility to all types of travelers.

DoubleDragon said Niseko Hokkaido is a world-class premier ski destination which remains popular year-round from its picturesque landscapes to its natural hot springs, making it a very good location for its first overseas hotel venture.

“The extension of the Shinkansen bullet train to Niseko and Sapporo will further improve access to the region which is also reported to be in the running to host the 2030 Winter Olympics,” the company said.

DoubleDragon earlier tapped H2 Christie’s International Real Estate as the exclusive sales and marketing agent of the Japan location.

Hotel101 is the first Filipino homegrown hotel chain to expand in other countries.

Aside from Japan, DoubleDragon is also looking to bring Hotel101 to Spain and the United States. It already purchased a 6,593-square-meter commercial land in Madrid for a hotel site.

The Hotel 101 concept allows DoubleDragon to generate revenue and income twice, first from the pre-selling of the condotel units, then second from long-term recurring revenue from hotel operations.
