5 PH shooters make Asian Games’ squad

Five shooters made the cut in the national team being assembled for the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

Officials of the Philippine National Shooting Association said this after Amparo Teresa Acuna made qualification during the final stages of the Asian Games Qualifying season for pistols and rifles at the Philippine Marine Shooting Range in Taguig over the weekend.

PNSA secretary general Iryne Garcia said Franchette Quiroz was also selected at the end of the tryouts in the women’s 10-meter air pistol at the Philippine Marine Shooting Range in Taguig.

Acuna and Quiroz were joined by trap shooter Hagen Topacio, along with skeet shooters Enrique Leandro Enriquez and Brian Paul Rosario.

Quiroz, who is at no. 138 in the Olympic Qualifying Rankings in the women’s 10-meter air pistol action, made it with her score of 569.

The 33-year-old Topacio earlier made the criteria after hitting a 115 and placing 116th during the men’s trap event of the 2023 World Cup in Doha, Qatar last March.

The 31-year-old Enriquez hit the qualification standards in the men’s division with a score of 116 last May at the Skeet Grand Prix in Conselice, Italy.

Rosario rejoined the national squad last April when he knocked in 114 points during tryouts at the Bureau of Corrections range in Muntinlupa.

Garcia said all shooters who hit the Asian Games’ criteria will be sent to the World Championships in Baku Azerbaijan, set from August 4 to Sept 3.

The PNSA, according to Garcia, is still not done yet with their selection process as the tryouts for trap and skeet shooting are still going on.

Garcia said veteran campaigners Jethro Dionisio , Eric Ang, Carlos Carag and Ormoc City Rep. Richard Gomez are still seeking slots in the men’s trap, while Valerie Levanza is in contention in the women’s side.

They also have Joaquin Miguel Ancheta vying for a seat in men’s skeet.
