NGCP places Luzon grid on red alert amid lack of supply

The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines placed the Luzon grid on red alert status today from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. amid lack of supply.

This means there is a possibility of rotating brownouts in different areas, although Manila Electric Co. had not announced any manual load dropping schedule.

“Five  power plants are on forced outage, while three  others are running on derated capacities, for a total of 1,354MW unavailable to the grid,” NGCP said.

NGCP also placed the Luzon grid on yellow alert from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. amid the forecasted continuing thin power supply.

NGCP said peak demand was forecasted at 12,468 megawatts, while  available capacity was only at 12,186 MW.

A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s regulating and contingency requirement.
