The University of Perpetual Help System DALTA has retired Barangay Ginebra playmaker Earl Scottie Thompson’s NCAA jersey no. 6 in simple ceremonies at the UPHSD-Las Pinas City Gym II on Thursday.
University officials, who were on hand to witness the ceremonies, included Perpetual Altas Team Manager and Board Liaison Officer for Sports and Athletics, Anton Tamayo and Las Pinas campus School Director Dr. Arnaldo De Guzman. The event was also attended by alumni, students, school officials, and fans of the famous basketball player.
In an interview, UPHS and Dalta Group of Companies CEO and Chairman of the Board Dr./BGen. Antonio L. Tamayo said: “The first time we saw Scottie take to the basketball court, we already knew he was special. With his diligent work ethic and the solid support of our staff, he blossomed into a fine basketball player. He is an example and an inspiration to all Perpetualites, and we will always be proud of him and his accomplishments.”
Meanwhile, Joseph Thompson, Scottie’s father said that he is thankful for the efforts of the Perpetual community.
“I remember when Scottie suffered from a back injury in his third year with the Altas. I was so worried, I even asked him to go home and continue his studies in Digos City. But Scottie refused because he wanted to pursue his dream by playing for the Altas in his 4th year,” Joseph Thompson said. “As a father, I’m very proud of Scottie. But like any other father, I always tell him to be humble and never think that he is on top of the world.”
UPHSD President Anthony Tamayo said that Thompson will always be welcome in the Perpetualite family.
“Once a Perpetualite, always a Perpetualite. Our doors will always be welcome to Scottie. He has shown us that the Perpetualite values of hard work and faith in God are pathways to success.”
Anton Tamayo also had praises for the former Perpetual Alta player.
“Scottie is one of the most exciting players to take to the Philippine Basketball Association hardcourt. He exemplifies the never-say-die attitude of Perpetualites, that no matter the challenge, a Perpetualite has what it takes to shine.” Dennis Abrina
Thompson also played for the Team Stars against Rising Stars in an exhibition match featuring Perpetual Altas Alumni and current players of the NCAA, organized by Perpetual Alumni Association.
Known for his triple-double and do-it-all performances, Thompson suited up for Perpetual Altas from 2011 to 2015 under the late great coach Aric del Rosario. He captured the NCAA MVP plum in Season 88.
Probably the most decorated Altas product, Thompson was also feted for his achievements in the field of basketball after being named the PBA MVP and winning seven championships with the Gin Kings and being a national player under ‘Gilas Pilipinas.’
