Speaker Martin G. Romualdez led what he described as a “festive and meaningful” lighting of the giant Christmas tree at the flagpole area to mark the start of the Christmas celebration at the House of Representatives on Monday evening.
In his message to House members, officials, secretariat, and congressional staff prior to the tree lighting and fireworks show, Romualdez said the event should remind everyone about the real reason for celebrating Christmas, which is the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Savior who was born in a humble manger over thousands of years ago.
“He brought love and hope into the world with the simple message of peace on earth and goodwill to all mankind,” the Leyte first district lawmaker said.
Romualdez also urged everyone to give thanks after three years of having to deal with restrictions arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We now can celebrate and experience the joy of the Yuletide season with a little more freedom and openness. Of course, let us remain vigilant and cautious to ensure that we will not go back to the dark age of the past, so you should have to wear your masks,” the Speaker said.
He added that the tree lighting should also remind everyone to share their Christmas blessings and offer a generous hand to those who need their help.
“Let us brighten up their lives and those whose Christmas may not be as glowing and cheerful as ours. Let us also pray and remain hopeful that we can overcome the present challenges we face so that we may have a brighter and better tomorrow, and a better New Year for all of us,” Romualdez said.
Lastly, the Speaker shared his heartfelt prayer that this would be the best Congress.
“I think the 19th Congress is off to a great start. You’ve started this 19th Congress First Regular session with a bang and with hard work. So much thanks I give to all of you — all the congressmen, congresswomen, and all the staff who made this possible,” he said.
Romualdez expressed the belief that everyone works hard because the House of Representatives is the House of the People and “that we do this for the Filipino people.”
The Speaker also thanked President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for his leadership and the inspiration he gives to Filipinos.
“Truly, we as a united country will rise again. Merry Christmas to all,” he said
