PLDT and Smart ramp up their commitment of building a resilient Philippines. Through one of its core advocacies called #SafeandSmart, the PLDT group continues to roll out programs that actively promote a culture of disaster preparedness, and swiftly deliver disaster response and recovery programs across the country.
“In the same way that we ensure that our operations continue to serve our customers despite disasters, we also help ensure that communities
across the country know the value of setting up an action plan before, during, and after any calamity,” said Cathy Yang, FVP and head of Corporate Communications at PLDT and Smart.
Resilient network
PLDT and Smart prioritize building a robust and resilient network, ensuring the continuity of communications services during disasters.
When a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck North Luzon last week, the PLDT group ensured the integrity of its network and connectivity in Abra, Ilocos Sur, and other hard-hit provinces. Disruptions in other affected areas were quickly addressed and network services were restored.
Culture of resilience
Celebrating July as the National Disaster Resilience Month, PLDT and Smart and the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation launched the Ligtas Kit, a package that provides quick, emergency communications support to communities during disasters.
The two telcos also rolled out the #SafePH Digital Caravan to raise awareness on disaster preparedness.
PLDT and Smart also recently joined the Climate Forum organized by Boac, Marinduque, where Stephanie V. Orlino, AVP and head of Stakeholder Management, shared the disaster resilience program of PLDT and Smart.
Value of malasakit
Guided by the company’s core value of malasakit, PLDT and Smart have long been quick to help those who most need it during a disaster.
Immediately after the North Luzon quake, Libreng Tawag and Libreng WiFi stations began operations to serve the communication needs of residents in quake-hit areas. Through PLDT-Smart Foundation and Alagang Kapatid Foundation Inc., affected communities in quake-hit North Luzon received food packs and hygiene kits.
North Luzon customers were also offered emergency load assistance and bill reprieves to help them get back on their feet.
Special recognition
Citing their remarkable contribution in disaster response operations and activities, the Office of Civil Defense and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in a recent ceremony lauded PLDT and Smart. The recognition underscores the commitment of the PLDT group to its #SafeandSmart advocacy, and to attaining UN SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
