Mali with his nickname Vishwamali is a female Sri Lankan elephant. Mali was 3 years sent to the country by the Sri Lankan Government as a gift to then First Lady Imelda Marcos in 1977. The United Nations records in 2021 over 8,400 species of wild fauna and flora are critically endangered, while close to 30,000 more are understood to be endangered or vulnerable. Based on these estimates, it is suggested that over a million species are threatened with extinction.
