Diverse coming-of-age and rom-com films, which highlight the different facets of relationships in contemporary society, will be screened online for free on Wednesdays of this month.
It is headlined by Submarine (2010), a rom-com drama directed by filmmaker and British actor Richard Ayoade. Based on the novel by Welsh writer Joe Dunthorne, it follows teenager named Oliver, who woos his crush Jordana. He finds himself in a mission to hold his family together after his mom’s ex-boyfriend moves in next door. The film is streaming today.
The critically-acclaimed animated romantic fantasy Kimi No Na wa (Your Name) (2016) explores the magical connection between Tokyo-based Taki Tachibana and countryside girl Mitsuha Miyamizu. Directed by Japanese animator, filmmaker, author, and manga artist Makoto Shinkai, the two high schoolers suddenly swapped bodies. It is slated on Feb. 16.
Two love-sick Hong Kong policemen star in Chungking Express (1994), a Cantonese romance crime film by Hong Kong director, screenwriter, and producer Wong Kar-wai. It introduces Taiwan-raised cop He Qiwu who meets a drug smuggler and the distraught Cop 663, who turns his attention to an ethereal yet quirky café waitress. It will be showcased on Feb. 23.
The Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD) of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde selected these full-length movies to focus on the reality, the push and pull of pressures and expectations, and the essence of connection in the modern landscape.
The free and public online screenings will be conducted via Zoom every 12:00 noon on the scheduled dates.
