Power retailer Manila Electric Co. said Thursday it placed emergency crew on full alert to provide 24-hour assistance during the celebration welcoming the New Year.
Meralco said in a statement the move would ensure that it would be able to respond to any power-related emergency on New Year’s Eve.
It said contingency measures are in place in case power facilities get affected by pyrotechnics, firecracker explosions or even weather disturbances.
“We would like to advise the public not to play with firecrackers and pyrotechnics near electric lines and transformers, as these may cause power interruptions and even result in accidents,” said Meralco vice president and head of corporate communications Joe Zaldarriaga.
He said confetti, party poppers and balloons could also cause electrical problems when these get in contact with electric facilities and it would be best to use them in open spaces and far from Meralco facilities.
