Reshowing of award-winning film to benefit deaf scholars

In celebration of the International Day of Sign Languages, the School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS) of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) brings back the award-winning 2009 film Dinig Sana Kita (If I Knew What You Said) by Mike Sandejas in a one-time benefit screening on Sept. 23 at the Augusto-Rosario Gonzalez (ARG) Theater.

 The College's School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS) will hold a screening of Dinig Sana Kita, an award-winning film that revolves around the story of a deaf boy and a musician girl.

Dinig Sana Kita (If I Knew What You Said) narrates the inspiring relationship between a Deaf boy Kiko (Romalito Mallari) and a rocker of a girl Nina (Zoe Sandejas) when they crossed paths in a Baguio camp that mingled hearing and non-hearing youth. It reflects how lives lived in silence and in noise respectively can seamlessly blend through a mutual passion and love for music.

Produced under Cinemalaya and Echo and Mirage Entertainment, the Filipino drama was the pioneer film to cast deaf actors. Then Benildean students and members of the Silent Steps, the performing arts group of the SDEAS, participated in the production. 

Written and directed by Sandejas, who is also a former faculty member under the College’s Digital Filmmaking (DFilm) Program, the film took home the Best Original Music Score, National Council for Children’s Television Award, and Audience Award at the 2009 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. 

It also earned the Digital Movie Musical Scorer of the Year, Digital Movie Sound Engineer of the Year, and Digital Movie Original Theme Song of the Year from the 2010 Star Awards for Movies. The male lead, Mallari, likewise bagged the New Movie Actor of the Year. 

It was likewise recognized at the 2010 Gawad Urian Awards and at the 2010 Golden Screen Awards.

The showing serves as the 10th anniversary screening of the movie and is open to the public.

Walk-in guests can register at the ticket booth at 3:00 p.m. while the film screening starts at 4:00 p.m. at the Augusto-Rosario Gonzalez  (ARG) Theater, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) Taft Campus, 2544 Taft Avenue, Malate, Manila.
