PH soft netter bags bronze in Asian tourney

National player Princess Catindig captured the coveted bronze medal in women’s 21-under division of the 1st Asian University Junior Soft Tennis Championships at the Colegio San Agustin indoor tennis court in San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan  yesterday.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association Most Valuable Player from San Beda University made it to the semifinal round after posting victories over Ana Kawingian of Indonesia 3-2 (8-6), Rin Sothery of Cambodia 3-0 and Asees Kaur Chahal of India 3-0.

But she lost her semifinal match 3-4 (4-7).

Meanwhile, Catindig is set to compete in the 1st Asian University Soft Tennis Championships which starts today.

Expected to grace the tournament’s Indigenous Peoples-themed opening ceremonies is Philippine Olympic Committee first vice president Joey Romasanta.

The 1st Asian University Soft Tennis Championships, which will serve as SEA Games test event, will give the country’s top netters the opportunity to test their own strengths and equally pit their respective skills against the best players from Japan, Chinese Taipei, India, Mongolia, Thailand, Malaysia, China, Nepal, Indonesia, South Korea and DPR Korea.

The last time soft tennis was played in the SEA Games was in Indonesia (2011) when the Philippines won one silver and five bronzes.
