The Philippines failed to meet the targets set under the National Renewable Energy Program, prompting the government to initiate a review of the plan.
The share of RE in the power supply mix fell to 23 percent last year compared with the target of 30 percent share under NREP.
“Instead of increasing the share of RE in the supply mix, we’re reducing. But there are a lot of factors that explain that, it’s not just because we’re using less RE. There are a lot more plants that we’re built that were using non-RE. The pie got bigger with the share of non-RE getting bigger. For RE, the increase was not proportional,” National Renewable Energy Board chairperson Monalisa Dimalanta said.
Energy Department director for renewable energy management bureau Mylene Capongcol said when the NREP was issued in 2011 (covering the period from 2011 to 2030), the target was to triple RE capacity by 2030 from 5,000 MW.
NREP outlines the policy framework under Republic Act 9513, or the Renewable Energy Act of 2008, and sets the strategic building blocks to help achieve the RE goals.
