Taguig convenes disaster council over dengue risks, earthquake drill

Taguig City Mayor Lino Edgardo Cayetano on Monday convened members of the city’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and discussed the anti-dengue measure and other contingency plans during emergency situations.

Cayetano ordered the Council to upgrade the city’s disaster preparedness and response measures and continue to conduct earthquake drills and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) trainings to prepare city government personnel and residents in the event of a big quake in Metro Manila.

The city chief executive also directed his men to adopt the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council’s Memorandum Circular No. 1 Series of 2019 enjoining all member agencies to support the nationwide Dengue epidemic response.

Cayetano discussed the workflow of the cancellation of classes during bad weather condition and other emergencies, the disaster preparedness in schools and the community and long-term disaster risk reduction and management plan for the city.

During the meeting, Cayetano stressed that the attack rate or the measure of how fast dengue spreads in the community remains low in Taguig.

“This is attributed to the strategies continuously being done by the city to fight dengue,” he said.

The City of Taguig continues its aggressive fight against dengue through multiple strategies and interventions including simultaneous cleanup drives, and reproduction and distribution of Information, Education and Communication materials.

The city government conducted its Dengue Cleanup Day last Friday at city hall, barangay halls, public and private schools, barangay health centers, super health centers, the Taguig-Pateros District Hospital, the Taguig City University, Sentro Kalinga, daycare centers, police stations, public transportation terminals and public markets.

The activity took place less than a month after Taguig City’s first-ever Dengue Summit, which was organized way before the Department of Health declared a nationwide dengue alert.

Communities are encouraged to do the cleanup daily at 4 p.m. to destroy possible breeding sites such as  laundry tanks, uncovered tanks/cisterns, drums and barrels, discarded buckets and other containers, among others, being targeted, all under the government’s 4S strategy: Search and destroy all mosquito breeding sites; Self-protection measures like mosquito repellants; Seek early consultation, and Say YES to misting.
