Team Philippines took home 37 gold medals to win the overall championship in the Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.
In the event that was held from August 1 to 10, Mongolia and Singapore both had 19 gold medals. Mongolia took second while Singapore settled for third.
There are 13 countries that joined, according to a dispatch sent by National Chess Federation of the Philippines executive director Jayson Gonzales.
Among the winners are Al Basher Buto (Under 10 boys), Ruelle Canino (U12 Girls), woman FIDE Master Gladimir Chester Romero of Cagayan de Oro (U12 Boys) and Angelie Biete (U16, silver).
And this includes China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Taipei, Vietnam and Thailand.
There were a total number of 250 competing players who saw action.
Also getting medals are Michael Concio Jr., bronze, U16 boys; Dasmarinas bet Kaye Lalaine Regidor, U12 Girls; Sta. Rosa, Laguna’s Jerlyn Mae San Diego, bronze U16; Dasmarinas woodpusher Ruth Joy Vinuya, gold U16, girls; and Far Eastern University- Diliman chesser Elah Sarelle Perez bronze, U18 girls.
Meanwhile, the country’s top youth woodpushers led by Vincent Ryu Dimayuga will see action in the Open Kitchen Rapid Chess Tournament dubbed as IM Joel Banawa Chess Cup on September 1 (Sunday) at the Open Kitchen, Rockwell Business Center-Sheridan, Highwayhills, Greenfields District in Mandaluyong City.
Joining Dimayuga are defending champion Angele Tenshi Biete of Las Pinas City, Gladimir Chester “Rocky” Falconit Romero of Tanauan City, Batangas, Mar Aviel Carredo of Quezon City, Austin Klhoe of Mandaluyong City, siblings Ivan and Jericho Cu of San Juan City as well brothers Prince and Oshrie Jhames “OJ” Reyes of Dila-Dila, Santa Rita, Pampanga.
Tournament registration start at eight am to 10:30 am followed by simple opening ceremony.
The format is seven-round Swiss System with time control of 10 minutes plus ten seconds increment being held to honor the late IM Rolly Martinez. The event is backed by China Aurelio and Mimi Casas of Open Kitchen, Phoenix Chess Academy, Danilo Ebao of Three Knights Printing Services, ChiliJuan, Arturo Turbanada, Mr. Jeffrey Dimalanta, Mega C and Ms. Emz Forrosuelo of Otsuka-Solar Philippines Inc. (Pocari Sweat).
The kiddies 14-years-old and below champion will pocket P5,000 plus trophy, medal and a Brand New Leap Digital chess clock, the runner-up will go home with P3,000 plus medal while the third will receive P2,000 plus medal.
