The Manila City government will build public toilets and urinals throughout the city to keep public areas clean from human feces, which can cause illnesses.
Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso made the announcement after receiving requests from the public through social media that public parks like the Liwasang Bonifacio are being littered with human wastes because of the lack of public toilets.
“I would build public toilets in Liwasang Bonifacio due to the deluge of requests on social media. There are so many people passing by the park and we want to accommodate them and find them an outlet to answer nature’s call,” he said.
The mayor said the toilets in Liwasang Bonifacio will be completed in a few weeks, while building other public toilets in the nation’s capital are now underway.
Domagoso observed that the Liwasang Bonifacio near the Manila City Hall has turned into a “tae-tae island” (island of feces).
The Manila chief executive said while there are limited places to build public toilets, he assured that the city government can find spots for them.
He said these are the small things that are taken for granted by the government, but when neglected will soon turn into a big problem.
“Before you know it, the problem is so huge you could barely move. So as much as possible we are seeking the public’s cooperation,” Domagoso said.
Users of public toilets will be free, he added.
