The Academy of Multi-Skills United Kingdom has conferred a doctorate fellow in business on Filipino entrepreneur Jolly Ting.
Ting, the chairman of Jolliville Holdings Corp., received the doctorate fellowship from AMS president Dr. Herbert J. Wooler on June 5, 2019 in a conferment ceremony in Macau. It was the second time Ting was recognized by the academic body. He was earlier accepted as a fellow by AMS.
AMS was founded and registered in the UK in 1995 to give professional recognition to multi-skilled personnel, skilled trades, crafts and professions. It is registered as a professional institute and is acknowledged as the leading institution in multi-skills with more than 15,000 members worldwide.
Ting was earlier recognized as a doctorate fellow by Royal Institute of Entrepreneurs in Singapore. He also received the Most Promising Entrepreneurship award during the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards 2014.
Ting won accolades for transforming Jolliville Holdings Corporation into a business conglomerate with a portfolio of strong companies in various industries that include real estate, power generation, water distribution, management, leisure and business process outsourcing.
JOH, a publicly listed company, aims to provide essential services to improve lives in the communities where it operates.
Ting, 73, was born in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro on Dec. 26, 1945. He was only 14 when his father died, a turning point in his life that forced him to study harder. He graduated salutatorian from a Catholic school.
He studied Business Management in the University of the East and worked in several restaurants as a dishwasher, kitchen helper, waiter and bartender to support his studies.
“I remember sleeping for only four hours between work and study. I studied from 2 pm to 6 pm, worked at the restaurant from 7 pm to 1 am and slept only from 2 am to 6 am,” Ting recalls.
After graduating from UE, he was promoted as a restaurant manager. He then put up his own restaurant in 1972, another restaurant in 1976 and a third in 1979.
In 1986, he established Jolliville Realty and Development Co. Inc. as a realty company. Three years after, JRDCI was transformed into a holding company and was renamed Jolliville Holdings Corp.
“In the mid-1980s, I founded Jolliville to manage a small portfolio of real estate assets. We started out leasing and managing a couple of Metro Manila properties and catered to a very niche market,” Ting says.
“In the late 1990s, we were presented with a rare opportunity to operate a privately-run water company in my second hometown Calapan, Oriental Mindoro. We took over the operations of Calapan Waterworks Corp. with some hesitation. Perhaps I was personally influenced by my entrepreneurial spirit and my love for my hometown that we took on the challenge despite our inexperience in the water distribution business back then,” he says.
In 2002, JOH was listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange to raise funds for the water development project of Calapan Waterworks Corp. Soon after, Calapan Water became the group’s flagship company and water revenues became its top growth driver.
“By this time, our company’s portfolio had expanded to include diversified interests in management, leasing, real estate, business process outsourcing and water distribution,” says Ting.
In 2011, with the looming power crisis in Oriental Mindoro, JOH saw an opportunity to venture into the power industry through subsidiary Ormin Power Inc.
Since then, JOH has undertaken several developments across different business segments. “Our water distribution business has expanded to service the town of Agoo in La Union and the town of Tabuk, Kalinga. Recently, we inaugurated a 10-megawatt mini hydropower plant in San Teodoro, Oriental Mindoro. We are also rolling out many developments that will enhance our real property assets,” says Ting.
