Fielding questions from a small group of pageant press, Ilene Astrid De Vera was cool, calm and collected, her strongest weapon come Binibining Pilipinas 2019 coronation night.
One of the top favorites, Ilene always exudes a friendly and warm disposition, easily the darling of the press in public appearances of this year’s candidates.
The statuesque, 23-year-old native of Mandaue City, who only had the Miss UP 2015 title when she tried and won at Mutya ng Pilipinas, and eventually finished as 4th runner-up in the Miss Asia-Pacific International 2017, said the experience has given her self-confidence and a great source of emotional strength.
“This world is a jungle. You either fight or run forever. To be Miss Universe Philippines, one must be strong-willed, dauntless and limitless. There is nothing I want more than to represent my province,” said the 5-foot-9 model and aspiring broadcaster.
Ilene hoped to become the first Miss Philippines Universe from Cebu since Pilar Pilapil took the title in 1967.
“It has been an amazing experience. All of this has taught me to never give up on my dreams no matter what other people say. I want to thank everyone who is supporting me on this journey,” said the BA Mass Communication graduate of University of the Philippines-Cebu.
Ilene confessed that she feels some pressure from being a former titlist and runner-up in an international pageant. But she added that she is learning to trust herself and just enjoy the whole experience. More driven, determined and disciplined this time, the Cebuana has been seriously training under the tutelage of the Kagandahang Flores, repackaging herself, polishing her catwalk skills, and brushing up on her knowledge of social and current events the past several months.
Ilene, who grew up with a single mother, wants to have a platform for her advocacy to support women, especially, single parent. She supports the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency working as a volunteer.
“Volunteerism is something that I am very passionate about, and one that I’m most proud of. I want others to realize that small things, like lending a hand to others and making a difference in somebody’s lives, will really go a long way,” said the beach-lover and surfing enthusiast.
Watch out for Ilene on coronation night of Bb. Pilipinas on Sunday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
