Jomary “The Zamboanginian Fighter” Torres may have experienced three consecutive defeats, but she is not feeling deterred in her mixed martial arts career.
Once a promising stud in the women’s atomweight division, the 23-year-old slid off the radar following losses to Priscilla Hertati Lumban Gaol, Mei Yamaguchi, and Len Heqin.
Despite that, she is not losing heart.
In fact, she even joined her trainer, Rene “The Challenger” Catalan, with the Jawal Time Wushu Team in Indonesia to further hone her skills.
“I admit that there are still a lot of things to work on — that’s why I joined coach Rene here in Indonesia,” Torres explained.
“I made a lot of mistakes during our last fight. We always practice defending that armbar and triangle, but I failed to execute it in my match against Len. I have a lot to learn when it comes to mixed martial arts. I just have to look at my previous mistakes.”
For Catalan, bringing Torres with him to Indonesia is a no-brainer. He knows his pupil is talented, and wants to see her fulfill her potential.
Seeing Torres’ shortcomings in the past, Catalan knows those mistakes can be fixed.
“Jomary is a very good fighter. She has the talent, but I notice that she always forgets the things that we work on in the gym, especially on the ground,” he said.
“That’s why she’s here in Indonesia, so we can work on her muscle memory. We will continuously hone her skills. We’ll be back to basics on the mat, and we’ll enhance her wushu skills even further.”
Torres pointed out that Indonesia is an ideal destination to prepare for an upcoming bout as she has the luxury to train both indoors and outdoors.
“The climate is perfect. I think it’s even hotter here in Indonesia — that’s why I feel like this is the perfect place to train,” she said.
“The facilities are great as well and most of all, I can focus on working on my craft because I’m far from all the distractions.”
