Vice President Leni Robredo on Sunday denounced the disrespect shown by a Chinese student, who threw “taho” at a police officer who was conducting inspection at an MRT station.
Robredo said in a press statement that the Chinese woman’s act was an “insult” not just towards the police, but to the country and all Filipinos.
Noting how Filipino hospitality extends to the Chinese and other foreign nationals in the country, Robredo said foreigners should in turn respect the Philippines and its people.
She also underscored concerns that have been raised over the “special treatment” given to the Chinese—including jobs going to them instead of to Filipino workers—in line with the “friendship” that the Philippine government has with China.
The Vice President noted that this may have given way to the disrespect being shown by some Chinese nationals here.
“[W]ake-up call iyon sa ating lahat. Ano ba talaga? Maraming reklamo na iyong mga trabahong dapat sana sa Pilipino, nabibigay pa sa Instik. Tapos ito pa, parang kinakalinga natin sila tapos binabastos nila tayo,” she said.
