Phoenix battles Blackwater, eyes 4th win

League-leader Phoenix Petroleum eyes to stretch its winning streak to four as it continues its quest in the 2019 Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup.

The scene shifts to Ynares Center in Antipolo City, where the rampaging Fuel Masters (3-0) get tested by a rejuvenated Blackwater (1-2) side at 4:30 p.m. today, while Rain or Shine (2-1) and San Miguel Beer (2-2) meet at 7 p.m.

Currently enjoying its best start in franchise history, the Fuel Masters have found the right formula thus far.

However, Phoenix coach Louie Alas doesn’t want any part of complacency as he very much knows that a good start doesn’t mean a whole lot if it can’t be sustained.

“It’s always good to have a good start, but we need to continue being hungry,” said Alas. “Last conference, we also had a nice start and even had a twice-to-beat, but we still fell short. That’s what I always remind the boys.”

Alas’ wards last took down Columbian Dyip, 108-98, last week to gain some separation at the top.

The Elite will be an interesting challenge, though. After starting out with a 0-2 slate, Blackwater rose up the last time out, listing its first win with an impressive 111-99 rout of Rain or Shine.

The Elasto Painters will now look to vent their ire on the Beermen, who are having a roller-coaster run so far.

The defending champions have alternated wins and losses so far, losing their last assignment against TNT KaTropa, 93-104, last Sunday.
