Programs in age group tennis will spur the development of the sport in the country in the coming years.
Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) president Antonio Cablitas said this during a five-day national training camp that was held in cooperation with the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
The camp, which ran from Dec. 14 to 18 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Malate, Manila, was led Jonathan Stubbs, the newly appointed ITF Development Officer for South, Southeast and East Asia.
Stubbs, who started on his new role in January, 11 months ago, is supervising coaches in teaching the top boys and girls players in 12 to 16 years old levels from Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and Metro Manila.
“This will further advance tennis development in the country. My thrust is to help the children,” said Cablitas.
The Hong Kong-based Stubbs is a high-performance coach who was appointed director of player development for the Hong Kong Tennis Association.
“In the future, they will be become the top men and women players in the country. I really would like to help in their development,” added Cablitas.
Stubbs, who was as national coach of the Brunei Tennis Association and the United Arab Emirates Tennis Association, is expected to be back again next year.
Fitness coach Jimbo Saret is also among the lecturers. He talked about conditioning in tennis while many-time Davis Cup team coach Martin Misa, shared his knowledge on planning and goal-setting.
“I would like to have a wide participation here, and it should be a continuing plan,” said Cablitas.
