Orchard's Sean Ramos held off a charging Paolo Wong to complete a wire-to-wire triumph in the men’s championship while Villamor’s Nicole Abelar took the women’s crown in the Canlubang Amateur Open at Cangolf’s North and South courses in Laguna yesterday.
Ramos recovered from a second 73 with a gutsy 69 for a 54-hole total of 211, foiling Wong, who fought back with a 70 in the second day and closed out with a four-under 68 for a 214, with Aguinaldo’s Masaichi Otake snaring third place via countback at 218 after a 70.
Kim Tae Soo, also of Orchard, likewise pooled a 218 after a 71 but lost in the countback to Otake and settled for fourth while Southwoods’ Jaehyun Jung matched Wong’s four-under card to place fifth at 219 in the annual event hosted annually by the Yulo family in their continuing effort to help boost amateur golf.
Abelar, on the other hand, strung up a pair of 68s to rule the 36-hole women’s division, edging The Country Club’s Samantha Dizon, who failed to sustain her opening four-under card with a 70.
She wound up with a 138 and nipped teammate Eagle Ace Superal and Alabang’s Laurea Duque in the countback for second. Superal rallied with a 66 while Duque carded a 70.
Kristine Torralba, also of TCC, slowed down with a 71 after a 69 and finished fifth at 140 followed by teammates Laia Barro, who matched par 72 for a 141 and Rafaela Singson, who shot a 71 for a 143.
Other titles disputed over 36 holes in the tournament supported by hole-in-one sponsor The Turf Company and Texas Eagle (Golf Cars and Utility Vehicle) were the Classes A, B and C.
Paolo Barro of Southwoods also rallied with a 69 to end up sixth at 220 in men’s division while Army’s Josh Jorge carded a 71 for a 222 and Bong Brobio of Forest Hills and club bet Carlo Villaroman finished tied at ninth at 225 after a 73 and 75, respectively.
