World University Golf preparations underway

LUBAO–The International Golf Federation, led by Nicholas Stewart Shan of South Africa, has completed its technical inspection of the Pradera Verde Golf Club in Lubao, site of the prestigious 17th World University Golf Championship from May 16 to 19.

In attendance during the technical inspection were National Golf Federation president Carlos Coscoluella Sr., member of Lubao Mayor Mylyn Pineda-Cayabyab’s staff, led by her secretary Edith Rodriguez, Jose Marie Hernandez, and WUGC tournament coordinator Joey Seran of Pradera Verde Golf Club.

They were joined in by Mike Singgaran, the WUGC Organizing Committee CEO; Joseph Sy, the OC Deputy CEO; and members of the WUGC Secretariat led by Cecille V. Sarmiento and Annie Rodas.

The glitzy opening parade of Athletes and Participants on May 16 will be held at the Municipality of Lubao Hall, with Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda and her husband, sportsman-philanthropist Rodolfo “Bong” Pineda expected to grace the occasion.

The biennial competition features the top university golfers from around the world.

From security to entertainment of athletes and team officials to the four-day golf tournament itself, everything has been covered by the WUGC Organizing Committee and the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines, the country’s sole member representative to the International University Sports Federation, which is the world university sports body that sanctions such events as the biennial Summer Universiade and Winter Universiade and the various international university competitions for the different disciplines.

During the entire WUGC competitions, a medical personnel will be provided by the fast-growing Municipality of Lubao, with ambulance vehicles on standby on a 24/7 basis.

The four-day festival will include daily entertainment and cultural programs to be presented by the Municipality of Lubao under the Mayor’s Office as part of its tourism promotion not only of Pampanga but the Philippines as a whole as well as Welcome-Closing Gala Nights and crowd-drawing activities.

Leading the list are Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda and her husband, sportsman-philanthropist Rodolfo “Bong” Pineda, Lubao Mayor Mylyn Pineda-Cayabyab, FESSAP Chairman Alvin Tai Lian, FESSAP president Baldomero Estenzo, FESSAP Honorary President David Ong, FESSAP Executive Vice President Robert Milton Calo, Philippine Golf team’s Head of Delegation Angel Ngu, Felix Tiukinhoy of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. and the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association.
