ANTONIO Campbell might be a new name in terms of incoming imports for the 2018 Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup, but Alaska is high on him.
The Aces believe that Campbell can be a force to reckon with as they hope he can lead them back to glory after constant mediocrity the past several campaigns.
The 23-year-old Campbell made his impact felt right away by impressing in his first scrimmages and tune-up games in Alaska’s lead-up to the second conference.
Alaska coach Alex Compton hopes that Campbell can continue what he started come tournament time.
“He (Campbell) is showing a lot of promise so far,” said Compton. “We are positive that he can help us in a big way in the coming conference. We’re excited to have him.”
Campbell has some serious backing behind him and his play as he was recommended by legendary Alaska import Sean Chambers, who is still very much part of the Aces, being a consultant from a distance.
Obviously, Alaska hopes that Campbell can turn out like Chambers, who was one of the premier imports in the 90s.
Meanwhile, San Miguel Beer is will be banking on a Triple Tower Threat with the entry of 6’9” import Troy Gillenwater, who will take the place of former Best Import awardee Charles Rhodes, now playing playing in the Korea Basketball League.
Gillenwater and rookie top pick Christian Standhardinger can strengthen the Beermen’s interior further, since they also have 6’11” June Mar Fajardo.
