San Beda U assured of overall title

ASSURED of winning its third straight overall crown, San Beda University is ready for another challenge after the 93rd National Collegiate Athletic Association season is over.

Management committee member Jose Mari Lacson said it’s possible for the school to go for a “four-peat” following a thanksgiving ceremony last Monday at the San Beda University-Manila campus in Mendiola, Manila.

Their third straight overall crown is almost in the bag, with two more events on tap–athletics and cheerdancing.

Their bid for a three-peat became more successful right after the school was declared a university this year.

“Because we are now a university, there’s not much changes (in the performances of the athletes). What will change is that the weaker teams that join other events will just have to get stronger,” said Lacson.

With the season almost over, the Red Lions have championships in men’s basketball, men’s chess, taekwondo, soft tennis, swimming and badminton.

In junior action, the Red Cubs prevailed in swimming, lawn tennis, football and badminton.

Overall, this is the sixth time that San Beda has won the general championship in the senior division.

On the other hand, the Red Cubs have claimed their 15th crown in the junior division.

With the way things are going, San Beda as a university is still committed to be part of the NCAA.

But if an offer to join the University Athletic Association of the Philippines if the school does well will be considered if the conditions are right.
