The Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to explain why Customs fixer Mark Taguba remains in its custody.
The show cause order was issued by Manila RTC Judge Rainelda Estacio-Montesa in a hearing today.
On February 2, 2018, the court had instructed the NBI to transfer Taguba from the NBI Headquarters to the Manila City Jail.
Montesa gave NBI Custodial Center Chief Menardo Cariaga 48 hours to explain the bureau's failure to bring Taguba to the city jail.
Taguba was at the Manila RTC today.
His lawyer filed an urgent motion to stay in the custody of the NBI.
The court had previously junked Taguba's request to remain at the NBI.
The court said there was no proof Taguba's life was under threat.
It also added it is not the duty of the NBI to guard suspects with pending criminal cases.
Taguba is facing charges for importation of illegal drugs.
This is in connection with the P 6.4 billion pesos worth of shabu shipment from China that passed through the Bureau of Customs' express lane.
