DAVAO CITY—A police officer was gunned down by unidentified armed men Monday morning at Situo Luman, Barangay New Valencia in Tugbok.
The victim was identified as PO3 Wilfredo Bansag Garol Jr., 34, a resident of Calinan District who was assigned at Baguio Police Station.
Initial investigation showed that the police officer had just driven his wife to the school where she worked when two men asked to hitch a ride on his motorcycle.
The suspects, whom the police said may be members of the New People’s Army, then shot Garol repeatedly and took his vehicle and service firearm.
Davao City Police Office Director Sr. Supt. Alexander Tagum vowed to track down and apprehend Garol’s killers.
“The death of PO3 Garol will not deter our commitment in our intensified fight against all forms of domestic threats posed by communist terrorists and criminals. This incident will also serve as a strong warning to all personnel of DCPO that they cannot afford to relax their personal security,” Tagum said.
“Although we accept the danger of our chosen vocation, we will not allow his killers go unpunished,” Tagum added.
Police Regional Office-11 Director Chief Sup., Manuel Gaerlan said Garol’s murder only showed that communist rebels have no regard for human rights.
