THE University of the East Warriors are still celebrating Alvin Pasaol’s good showing last Wednesday.
And coach Derrick Pumaren hopes that the positive things they gained when they played against the La Salle Green Archers will still be around when the Warriors confront the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers at 2 p.m. today at the Mall of Asia Arena.
“We need something coming into the game on Saturday. They’re stronger, and we can use this positive against UST.
There are only a few players who can score more than 40 points in a game.
And when the Warriors lost to the defending champion La Salle Green Archers, 100-106, last Wednesday at the Big Dome, one of their shooters Alvin Pasaol caught fire with a 20-year high of 49 points.
Pasaol overshadowed the monster showing Green Archer Ben Mbala, who had 39 points.
The Warriors have never won a single game in six outings, and they have the same record with the Growling Tigers.
The Tigers are coming off an 86-115 setback to the Green Archers.
In the second game, Far Eastern University hopes to extend its winning streak to three in their 4 p.m. match with the Adamson Falcons.
The Tams are upbeat after they hurdled the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 78-59.
Pasaol’s 49-point explosion is the first time in 15 years that a player scored 40 or more points in the league. National University’s Jeff Napa unloaded 43 points against the Adamson Falcons in Season 65.
Pasaol’s 49 points is the most points scored by a Red Warrior since James Yap’s 36 in UAAP Season 65 in 2002. It also surpassed Paolo Mendoza’s 48-point performance for UP in 1999.
Pasaol also surpassed UE’s Allan Caidic and UST’s Pido Jarencio output during their legendary duel. Caidic had 46 and Jarencio answered with 48 in Game 3 of the UAAP Season 47 Finals in 1984.
Pasaol’s 49 came six points short of the record held by former Glowing Goldies forward and now Mapua Assistant Coach Ed Cordero who fired 54 points in 1979.
