A BOOK on 68 visual artists, their works noted for variations in content and form, will be launched on Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. at the Ayala Museum Main at the Greenbelt in Makati City.
The 9-by-12-inch, 176-page book, published by The Crucible Workshop, is written by Dr. Paul Blanco Zafaralla, a multi-awarded art critic and a retired professor of the Department of Humanities at the state-run University of the Philippines in Los Baňos, Laguna.
The visual artists—whose works covered the decades 1950s to 1980s—have enriched, according to critics, the treasure trove of Philippine arts and the portraits reveal individual identities beyond physical likeness.
These are manifested by deportment, facial expressions, compositional angle, eye view, color, brushwork and the size relative to the art paper.
The text is hewn out of the language of the arts, art history and criticism, including semiotics, in a language that caters to professionals, art practitioners, and the general public without sacrificing depth and truthfulness.
Designed with a clear synergy between text and visuals, the book bids as a veritable Hall of Fame for the carefully evaluated 68 visual artists.
