THE Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers drew big baskets from Teytey Teodoro before he fouled out in the closing minutes.
His big efforts, however, were enough to power the Heavy Bombers to a 68-54 swamping of the University of Perpetual Help Altas on Friday at The Arena in San Juan.
Teodoro banged 26 points for the Heavy Bombers, who picked up their first win in two matches in the 93rd National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament.
This put the Heavy Bombers in a share of second at 1-1 with the Mapua University Cardinals, the Arellano University Chiefs and the San Sebastian Stags.
Teytey Teodoro, who fouled out with 1:38 to go, struck with eight of his 26 points in the last seven minutes.
He stepped it up with Abdel Poutouochi and Gio Lasquety just as JRU took the pains of nursing a five-point in the final period.
Poutouochi contributed 13 points and seven rebounds, while Lasquety also had 11 points to help JRU.
After scoring a triple past a defending Keith Pido, the Heavy Bombers took off on a 14-5 burst.
Their scoring attack upped their lead to 66-52 with two minutes remaining.
“Bumalik na ‘yung team namin,” said JRU coach Vergel Meneses.
Perpetual’s Prince Eze tallied 12 points and 16 rebounds, while GJ Ylagan also added 12 markers.
Technically, the Altas’ record now stands at 0-2 after they won their matchup with College of St. Benilde last Tuesday, but forfeited it due to an error with their uniforms.
Meanwhile, Hamadou Laminou eked out 21 points for the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, who started their campaign with a 74-64 subduing of the College of St. Benilde Blazers.
In the junior division, the University of Perpetual Help Junior Altas rebounded from their loss to La Salle Greenills with a 79-78 beating of the JRU Light Bombers.
Jielo Razon and Erol Bongal hit 25 and 21 points, respectively, for the Junior Altas.
Inand Fornillos and Joel Cagulangan made 16 and 14 points, respectively, to carry the Greenies to a 82-59 blasting of the Emilio Aguinaldo College Brigadiers.
