The San Sebastian Stags ran all night and leave behind an Arellano squad reeling from an 86-65 thrashing on Wednesday night at the Arellano University gym in Legarda.
Michael Calisaan tallied 12 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for the Stags as they posted their first win in two games in the 93rd National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball tournament.
Defying the Chiefs’ homecourt advantage, the Stags went on to gain a share of second spot with the former and the Mapua University Cardinals.
Kent Salado provided 15 points for the Chiefs.
He got tired as the Stags tried to keep up with their running game for most of the game.
Then, cramps on Salado’s right leg forced him out of the game in the 2:56.
“Yun lang (running game) ang ginawa namin dahil maliliit kami,” said Stags coach Egay Macaraya.
That was after the Stags moved out of reach, 58-50, off Calisaan’s putback.
The Stags got off to a great start by taking a 24-8 advantage in the first period.
Allyn Bulanadi and JM Calma added 10 points each for the Stags, who still managed to hold off the Chiefs after they came close, 40-43, in the last 2:23 of the third.
