The President was scheduled to speak at the Nikkei International Conference on the Future of Asia.

He was also supposed to have a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

In postponing his trip, Duterte said he needs to give his full attention and time to the situation in Marawi where heavy fighting continues between the military and the Maute terrorists.

Japan has told the Philippine government that it understands Duterte's move, saying that the Philippine leader can simply reschedule the trip to another date.
