Following the announcement of the new three-year style partnership between Diesel and AC Milan, the lifestyle brand has revealed the off-field kit for the “Rosso” Neri (red and black) team. Cool, high-performance, and with an irresistible urban touch, the kit embodies a style revolution in the world of global football.
“I am excited about the Diesel and AC Milan partnership,” reveals Andrea Rosso, creative director for Diesel’s licenses, in charge of the creative for this partnership. “My family and I have always supported Milan and this collaboration is a real challenge for us. We wanted to express our love and passion for fashion and creativity in this project, while bearing in mind that football fans and fashion fans do not always overlap. During the design phase, my team and I explored how we could unite these two groups and focus on the comfort factor, which is very important in sport. We blended classic tailoring with the world of street wear and added Diesel’s three signature styles: rock, denim, and military. The result? A ‘young-formal’ look with a touch of dynamic tailoring.”
The Diesel x AC Milan style partnership includes two types of custom-made uniforms, both strictly made in Italy. They were worn for the first time on the occasion of the Italian Super Cup in Doha on Dec. 23 2016. The first is the formal kit for players and staff. It consists of a hooded blazer (a real innovation for football uniforms) with stretch fleece sleeves and zips at the wrists to be worn with either a polo shirt or T-shirt (the first uniform without a shirt); a cashmere jumper with zip for very cold temperatures; a pair of iconic Diesel Jogg-Jeans with refined black treatment and a puffy parka with removable lining. The kit is complete with leather lace-up shoes featuring an all-around metal zip.
The kit reveals great attention to details: from the AC Milan badge, reproduced on the jacket with the same handcrafted technique used for military crests, to the red and black lining of the sleeves and the embroidery patch applied on the blazer’s lining depicting Diesel’s signature Mohican combined with the club’s iconic red and black stripes.
The second kit is the off-site uniform to be worn by players during transfers. The main piece is the reversible satin bomber jacket: one side celebrates AC Milan with the team colors and badge, the other tells the Diesel and AC Milan story of challenges, victories, commitment and determination through patch-symbols on a black background. These include the flags of cities where the team has been victorious, the initials of the team’s English founder Herbert Kilpin and his iconic catchphrase “red as fire”. Not to mention a series of important numbers: 7, the number of Champions Leagues won by the team; 78, the year Diesel was born; 18, the number of championships won and 1889, the year AC Milan was founded. And finally Renzo Rosso’s signature “enjoy”. The look is completed by a pair of distressed Jogg-Jeans and black leather sneakers with an all-round zip.
This is the first step that shows how Diesel intends to disrupt the world of traditional sport uniforms making them “unformal”. The players are beautiful, they have millions of followers in the social networks’ world: they are real celebrities and that’s also how they need to be dressed. Diesel has always been brave and also this time will innovate with braveness a consolidated category.
