THE Liberal Party bloc in the House of Representatives supporting the Duterte administration on Friday said its members will not support any impeachment rap against President Rodrigo Duterte.
LP member and Marikina Rep. Miro Quimbo said the former ruling LP decided not to support Duterte’s impeachment and even the move to unseat LP titular head and Vice President Leni Robredo as the impeachment process was divisive.
At a forum at the University of the Philippines-Los Baños on Thursday, Robredo said, the LP members who attended decided not to support any effort to impeach her or Duterte.
“The majority of those who were there said they were not supportive of any impeachment proceedings whether against the President or against me,” she said.
Quimbo said impeachment would only be counterproductive for Congress.
“It will only serve to distract us from the many important matters that Congress should be giving priority to,” Quimbo said.
He said the LP majority bloc met with Robredo to support Robredo.
“We likewise reiterated our strongest commitment of support to the Vice President, our party leader,” Quimbo said.
Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano earlier filed an impeachment rap against Duterte for his alleged inaction on China’s incursions, for betrayal of public trust and culpable violations of the Constitution for his alleged P2.2-billion hidden wealth, his administration’s war on drugs, the Davao Death Squad when he was mayor, and the President’s alleged inaction over the country’s maritime sovereign rights over the West Philippine Sea and Benham Rise.
On the other hand, Robredo would likely face an impeachment complaint as Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez hit Robredo for criticizing the administration’s war on drugs before a United Nations body.
Alvarez said Robredo committed betrayed public trust as she put the country in a bad light before the international community. With Rio N. Araja
