Protesters staged a raucous demonstration in front of the Deparment of Labor and Employment in Intramuros, Manila on Friday.
Most of them belong to the militant group Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU).
Demontrators were condemning the department order against issued by DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello that sought to stop illegal contractualization of workers.
Commotion characterized the rally as protesters kicked and tried to ram open the DOLE gate.
They also threw eggs and different objects at the DOLE logo.
Police came and prevented protesters from causing further disturbance.
The demonstrators say, instead of prohibiting job contractualization, DOLE’s department order 174 legalized the employers’ illegal practice of “endo,” wherein employment period is terminated before the sixth month to avoid paying benefits that are due to regular workers.
KMU believes, DOLE has the power to stop endo but it chose to conveniently pass the task on to Congress.
Protesters say, workers cannot hope for help from members of the House of Representatives since many of them are employers too.
