JERSEY no. 3 will no longer be seen on the back of any player from the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws in the coming 79th University Athletic Association of the Philippines women’s volleyball tournament when it begins this Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
That number used to belong to one of FEU’s great spikers, Rachel Anne Daquis, and the school will hang it on their gym during this afternoon’s jersey retirement ceremony.
The 5’10” Daquis played for the Lady Tams from 2004 to 2009 as an outside hitter/open spiker and was around when they took the crown in 2008.
Daquis, who started playing for various teams in the Philippine Super Liga after her time with FEU was up, is set to skip the upcoming season of the Philippine PSL.
She and several members of the team are set to undergo military training.
The Lady Tams remain one of major forces in the coming UAAP volleyball season.
Veterans Bernadeth Pons, Chin-Chin Basas, Remy Palma, Jerrili Malabanan, defensive specialist Buding Duremdes are still around with new playmaker Kyla Atienza, who took over from veteran Gyzelle Sy.
The Lady Tamaraws nearly made it last year as the 29-time champions dragged the Lady Spikers to a deciding Final Four match before bowing out.
So far, the chase is on for the crown with six teams contending for the throne, which La Salle currently holds.
