The provincial government of Ilocos Norte assured its constituents of a stronger preparedness in times of disasters such as Typhoon “Helen” (international name Megi), which has hit extreme North Luzon.
Gov. Imee Marcos convened the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Resiliency Council Monday morning to map out an efficient and effective preparedness and response plan in case Typhoon “Helen” batters the province.
Ilocos Norte agriculturist Norma Lagmay said the province follows intensified disaster and emergency precautionary methods “to aid our farmers and fishermen for a faster recovery.”
Lagmay said Marcos ordered the reaping of crops ready for harvest to minimize possible loss and destruction.
She said the “provincial government is always ready to provide rehabilitation materials to our farmers and fishermen.”
Support such as transportation for the harvested crops before a disaster strikes and equipment in the form of mechanical and flatbed dryers are readily available at agricultural office.
Veterinarian Loida Valenzuela called for the protection of animals during disasters and emergencies.
“City and municipal veterinarians teach barangay officials to properly evacuate animals,” added Valenzuela.
She noted that these animals must be moved to elevated places and protected from flash floods and flying roofs blown by strong winds.
Social Welfare and Development Officer Lilian Rin said the province has a stockpile of relief goods in seven satellite storehouses.
Rin said senior citizens are given utmost priority during disasters. “Let us help our elderly neighbors especially those who live near riverbanks and high-risk communities during disaster evacuation,” she said.
